Capital-Area Healthcare Forces Unite for New Web Resource
September 11th 2008 - TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - A first-of-its-kind health resource has come to the Capital region, bringing with it economic benefits, a connected workforce, improved medical care and a breakthrough in records management. BigBendHealth.com was launched today by the Economic Development Council of Tallahassee/Leon County (EDC) and the Big Bend Regional Healthcare Information Organization (BBRHIO).
"BigBendHealth.com will be the essential communication resource for
healthcare in the Capital region," said Martin Shipman, CEO of Tallahassee
Orthopedic Clinic and chair of the EDC Healthcare Roundtable. "Never before have
so many resources been offered in one place."
The site contains listings for many of the more than 400 job openings that now exist in the area's healthcare industry, plus details about each occupation and available local training to become employable. The largest private-industry sector in the region, healthcare is the third largest employer behind government and education.
"The healthcare sector employs more than 17,000 Big Bend residents," said EDC Chairman Tripp Transou, president of Tri-Eagle Sales.
"With so many of our young residents seeking employment outside of the area,
this site will help guide them to career-path opportunities right here at home."
BigBendHealth.com also provides secure, online access for patient records
- a first for the region. Thanks to the site?s network of hospitals, clinics and physician groups, care providers are able to access patient records at the touch of a button.
"If you need treatment in Panama City, but you live in Tallahassee, your
care will no longer be delayed due to a lack of information," said Dan Kaelin, a
Tallahassee physician and BigBendHealth.com chairman. "If you're allergic to
penicillin, for example, the doctor will be able to access that critical
information through this site and give you the appropriate treatment."
In addition to career information and records management, BigBendHealth.com will provide a low cost Personal Health Record (PHR), or
"My Records" portal, for residents in the Big Bend. This resource allows users to securely organize their basic medical history online for access by their physician and safe storage in the event of a natural disaster.
A joint effort by the EDC Healthcare Roundtable and BBRHIO, BigBendHealth.com is expected to become the single point of reference for healthcare in the capital region and a model for other sites throughout Florida. Coming together for the good of the community, these organizations aim to provide a service that will build careers and economic development while improving access to health records and information for all residents.
