Organizers promoting the Web portal BigBendHealth.com will begin 2009 with an advertising campaign designed to increase the public's awareness of the site and its benefits for doctors, patients and job seekers.

Details of the campaign, which includes everything from a 30-second television commercial to billboards throughout the area, were described during a Wednesday meeting of the Healthcare Roundtable of the Economic Development Council of Tallahassee/Leon County. The conversation also included inviting more health-care companies and industry allies to help underwrite some of the costs.

"Everybody I have talked to has been very positive about it. I don't foresee any problems," said roundtable member Martin Shipman, CEO of Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic.

Another goal of the promotion is to increase the usage of the site, which has separate sections for physicians, patients and for those seeking jobs in health-care professions. Hospitals, medical practices and other employers are posting jobs on the site, which also has wage and labor market information on the area.

"Fortunately, this is an industry that continues to show growth despite the overall economic decline," said Kimberly Moore, CEO of Workforce Plus, during her remarks on BigBendHealth.com as a tool for employers and job applicants.

The Web site also provides secure, online access to patient records, a feature that doctors, hospitals and other providers can utilize to save time and make patient care more efficient. They can obtain a patient's personal health record, receive lab test results, transmit billing data and other information.

"It's an exciting time. The work we have done here is a model that can be used across the state and around the nation," said Zach Finn, vice president of operations at heath-care technology company Avocare.
